The name itself is a signal. Okkalı comes from okka, the Ottoman unit of weight (standardized at roughly 1.28 kg), and entered Turkish as an adjective meaning substantial, hefty, full-weight — the word you reach for when something has real presence. That is what this coffee is designed to deliver.
The beans are 100% Arabica from the Rio Minas region of Brazil, grown at approximately 800 metres elevation in highland conditions that produce more aromatic complexity with lower acidity than lowland Robusta. After sun-drying in natural conditions, they are double-roasted — a second pass through the heat that deepens the smoky and spiced character that distinguishes Okkalı from Selamlique's medium-roast varieties. The roasting and grinding happen at Selamlique's own facility in Izmir, certified to ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 22000 Food Safety standards. Each bean is ground to a consistency of up to 35,000 particles — the extreme fine grind that Turkish coffee requires both for full extraction and for the thick foam layer that forms in the cezve.
Selamlique's tasting notes for Okkalı: light acidity, full body, high-intensity spicy and smoky aroma, smooth finish. The 1.2% caffeine content is on the higher end for Turkish coffee, consistent with the darker roast profile. Brewed in a cezve over low heat until the characteristic foam rises, the result is a concentrated, unfiltered cup with the sediment settling at the bottom — the telve that has been used for fortune-telling in Turkish tradition for centuries.
