Menengiç coffee contains no coffee beans at all. It is made from the small berries of the wild terebinth tree (Pistacia terebinthus), a relative of the pistachio that grows wild across Southeastern Anatolia. The ripe berries are gathered, dried, roasted dark like coffee, then ground — and because they are naturally rich in oil, the grind comes out soft and slightly moist, with a deep roasted-pistachio aroma. No coffee means no caffeine: the drink is naturally caffeine-free.
Osso is a coffee producer based in Adıyaman, a southeastern Turkish city known for its own coffee tradition. Alongside its dibek and Ottoman-style coffees, menengiç kahvesi is the one in its range made without a single coffee bean. This pack holds 200 g of roasted, ground menengiç.
Unlike Turkish coffee, menengiç is traditionally brewed in milk, not water:
- Stir about two teaspoons of menengiç coffee into a cup of milk in a cezve or small pot.
- Simmer over low heat, stirring continuously, and let it rise once or twice.
- Sweeten if you like, and serve in small cups while the foam is still on top.
The cup is nutty and gently smoky — closer to roasted pistachio than to coffee — with a naturally creamy body from the berries' own oils. It suits anyone who loves the ritual of Turkish coffee but wants an evening cup without caffeine, and it is a genuinely regional taste of southeastern Turkey for anyone drinking beyond the familiar.
