Kafkas chestnut puree is a smooth, sweetened chestnut spread from Bursa, the Turkish city long tied to chestnut growing and chestnut confectionery. This is a twin pack: two glass jars of 380 g each, 760 g in total. Each jar carries the red "Kafkas Bursa 1930" label and the Turkish name Tatlandırılmış Kestane Püresi, which simply means sweetened chestnut puree.
The texture is soft and creamy, easy to spread straight from the jar with no need to soften or stir. The flavour is the warm, nutty taste of cooked chestnut carried by sugar, in the style the French call crème de marrons (chestnut cream). It is naturally pale brown, with a gentle caramel-vanilla note.
Ways to use it
- Spread on warm toast, croissants, pancakes or crepes for breakfast
- Swirl through yoghurt, porridge or ice cream
- Fill cakes, tarts, choux pastry and Mont Blanc style desserts
- Spoon over waffles or use as a quick filling for sandwiches and crackers
What it is made of
Ingredients: chestnut, sugar, glucose syrup, flavouring (caramel-vanilla) and a preservative (potassium sorbate). Because it is a sweetened spread, it already tastes sweet on its own, so a thin layer goes a long way. It may contain traces of peanuts, gluten, sesame and other tree nuts.
Storage
Keep the unopened jars in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. After opening, store in the refrigerator and use within about one week.
Kafkas has been making chestnut sweets in Bursa since 1930, and this chestnut spread is one of its classic jarred products. The twin pack suits households that go through it quickly, or anyone who wants a spare jar in the cupboard.
