Şekerci Cafer Erol has been making confectionery in Istanbul since 1807, when Mehmet Efendi — trained in the Ottoman palace's sweet kitchens — opened the family's first shop in Eminönü. Five generations later the Erol family still runs the house from Kadıköy, and these mixed fruit dragees are one of its signature gift tins.
Inside the bronze keepsake tin: 300 g of glossy dragees in yellow, green, burgundy and purple. Each piece is a milk chocolate center — cocoa mass, cocoa butter and milk powder — sealed in a thin, crisp candy shell polished with carnauba wax, the glaze that gives classic dragees their shine. The shell cracks first, then the chocolate melts. Because they are panned by hand, the pieces are not perfectly uniform — a detail the maker states plainly on its own packaging.
The tin is printed with the founding year, 1807, and is sturdy enough to be reused long after the chocolate is gone. That makes this one of the easier Turkish gifts to send abroad: nothing fragile, a six-month sealed shelf life, and a box that looks like the heritage it carries.
