Çaykur Tomurcuk Earl Grey Tea – Turkish Bergamot Black Tea Tin

Tomurcuk means "bud" in Turkish, and that is exactly what goes into this tin: young shoot leaves of Rize black tea, scented with natural bergamot. It is Çaykur's take on Earl Grey — the familiar citrus-perfumed cup, built on the brisk, dark-amber tea grown along Turkey's rainy Black Sea coast instead of a soft Western blend. The yellow metal tin, printed with a tea glass and the green "bergamot aromalı doğal çay" (natural tea with bergamot aroma) seal, has looked much the same on Turkish shelves for decades.

Çaykur — Turkey's state tea enterprise, established by law in 1971 and headquartered in Rize — describes Tomurcuk as a tea for people who put taste above everything else, and notes it is prepared so it can be blended with any other tea. That is how many Turkish households actually use it: a spoonful added to plain black tea in the pot lifts the whole brew with bergamot, without switching teas entirely. It is equally good brewed on its own.

To prepare it the Turkish way, use a two-tier teapot (çaydanlık): rinse the leaves, let the concentrate steep over the lower kettle for about 15 minutes, then dilute to taste in tulip glasses. A standard mug infuser works fine too — this is loose leaf, no bags.
