This is pistachio baklava (fıstıklı baklava) from Karaköy Güllüoğlu, one of Turkey's most famous baklava houses and a name people travel to Istanbul specifically to taste. It arrives in a 900g metal gift box, which makes it as much a present as a dessert.
Baklava is built from paper-thin layers of yufka (filo) pastry, brushed with clarified butter and stacked by hand, with a generous filling of green pistachios pressed between them. After baking, it is finished with sugar syrup so each piece is crisp on the outside, buttery in the middle, and sweet without being heavy. The pistachios used for fıstıklı baklava are the prized Antep (Gaziantep) type — small, deep-green kernels whose colour is natural, not added — which is why a good pistachio baklava looks vividly green inside and tastes intensely nutty.
From the maker's own ingredient list, this baklava is made with wheat flour, clarified butter, pistachio kernel, beet sugar, water, wheat starch, egg and salt. It contains no glucose syrup. Note for allergies: it contains gluten, milk and dairy, and egg, and may contain small traces of walnut and hazelnut.
How to enjoy it: serve at room temperature, or warm the pieces for a few minutes in a low oven to bring the butter and aroma back to life — never let it get too hot. It is made to be shared, traditionally alongside Turkish coffee or a glass of tea, where the bitterness of the coffee balances the sweetness of the syrup. The metal box keeps the pieces protected and makes it an easy gift for Eid, weddings, hosting, or simply sending something special to someone far away.
Storage: keep the box sealed and cool. Baklava is best eaten fresh within a few days; if you need to keep it longer, store it in an airtight container in the fridge and bring it back toward room temperature before serving.
