Dibek coffee is not simply ground — it is pounded. In the traditional method, roasted coffee beans are crushed in a heavy stone or wooden mortar called a dibek, a technique practiced across Anatolia long before electric mills existed. The slower, cooler grinding preserves more of the bean's natural oils, yielding a coarser powder that brews into a cup noticeably softer and less bitter than standard Turkish coffee, with a thicker, velvety texture and a lingering aromatic foam.
This 250g tin is made by Harput Dibek, a company based in Elazığ, eastern Turkey — directly below the ancient walled hilltop of Harput, a settlement with roots stretching back to Urartu-era fortifications (accepted onto UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List in 2018). The brand has produced this blend since 2012, and it is now carried in markets and shopping centres across Turkey, Europe, and the Middle East.
Ingredients: ground Arabica coffee (fine grind, medium roast), coffee creamer, cocoa, cardamom seeds. Contains milk derivatives (coffee creamer contains sodium caseinate, a milk protein). Suitable for brewing in a traditional cezve over low heat.
The cardamom seeds — sourced for their aromatic warmth — are listed by Harput Dibek themselves as one of the distinguishing features of the blend. Combined with a touch of cocoa and a rounded coffee creamer base, the result is a cup with a smooth, slightly sweet character that requires no special equipment: brew it exactly as you would Turkish coffee, in a small pot over a low flame, stirring continuously until it rises.
What sets this apart from other dibek blends: the packaging alone carries the story. The tall black metal tin is printed with historic black-and-white photographs of Harput's citadel and a skyline banner carrying the brand name. The slogan reads Tarihten Gelen Kahve Lezzeti — "a coffee taste that comes from history." The airtight tin preserves aroma far longer than foil pouches.
