Çaykur Altınbaş is one of Turkey's most recognised black teas, produced by Çaykur, the state tea enterprise founded in the Rize region on the Black Sea coast. This box holds 40 large demlik (teapot) bags, 200g in total. The name Altınbaş, meaning "golden head," refers to the golden bud at the tip of the shoot and the small, fresh leaf just beneath it that give this grade its character.
Demlik bags are not single-cup bags. Each one is sized to brew a full teapot, so you get the colour and strength of traditional loose Turkish tea without measuring leaves or rinsing a strainer. The result is the deep amber-to-red cup that Turkish tea is known for, with a brisk, full-bodied taste.
How to brew with demlik bags
- Bring water to a boil in your teapot or the top of a Turkish double kettle (çaydanlık).
- Add one demlik bag for every 3 to 4 glasses of tea you want to make.
- Let it steep for 10 to 12 minutes over low heat.
- Pour a little into each glass, then top up with hot water to reach the strength you like, from light (açık) to strong (koyu).
Serve in tulip glasses, plain or with sugar. It suits everyday tea throughout the day and larger pots for guests and gatherings.
